Last night, news outlet Politico shocked the world with the release of a draft opinion by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito indicating plans to strike down Roe v. Wade. This would end the current federal constitutional protection of abortion rights and allow each state to decide whether to restrict or ban abortion. The court’s holding will not be final until it is published, likely in the next two months.

In the absence of Roe, at least 26 states will ban abortion, 13 of which have trigger laws that go into effect immediately. 200 clinics will face closure and 36 million people of reproductive age will lose access to abortion. The overturning of Roe would overturn 50 years of protections for abortion access, and almost immediately lead to stricter limits on access in large parts of the South and Midwest. 

The leak has created a global outcry, with nearly 1m mentions on Twitter and a reach of 1.7 billion. Thousands of Americans across the country are expressing their outrage and despair in the face of this uncertain future for reproductive healthcare justice.
