Covert network provides pills for thousands of abortions in U.S. post Roe

Amid legal and medical risks, a growing army of activists is funneling pills from Mexico into states that have banned abortion

The emerging network — fueled by the widespread availability of medication abortion — has made the illegal abortions of today simpler and safer than those of the pre-Roe era. Distinct from services that sell pills to patients on the internet, a growing army of community-based distributors is reaching pregnant women through word of mouth or social media to supply pills for free — though typically without medical oversight.

On Tuesday, the doors of the historic Howard Theater in Washington, DC’s Shaw neighborhood opened up to a crowd composed mainly of reproductive-rights activists and Democratic campaign and DNC staffers. By invite-only, they were there to see President Joe Biden.

On Monday, ‘Battleground’ screened at the iconic Roxie Theater, in partnership with ACCESS Reproductive Justice and San Francisco Women’s Political Committee. Thank you to everyone who took part in a fascinating post-screening discussion and, of course, to our partners too! On the east coast, we were proud to be this month’s pick at the Beacon Film Society with a screening in partnership with Planned Parenthood of Greater NY.

A coalition of inspiring partners will come together to discuss Battleground and support reproductive rights in Lincoln, NE TODAY, 10/21. Nebraska Abortion Resources, ACLU NE, Planned Parenthood NE and the Women’s Fund of Omaha will speak about their crucial work and the threats to reproductive freedom in the Midwest after a screening of the film.

Next week, on October 24, we’re delighted to be heading to Tucson, AZ with a one-off show at The Screening Room, in partnership with Abortion Fund of Arizona and Tucson Abortion Support Collective.

Planned Parenthood Keystone has organized a special screening of Battleground on 10/26 in Lancaster, PA at the Zoetropolis Theater.

Just in, today! ‘Battleground’ was named among the films in IndieWire’s preliminary list of Oscar predictions for the Best Documentary Feature category.

The team behind ‘Battleground’ is unwilling to accept an America where the lives of women are gambled with for political gain. In order to create change, we must help people understand the motivations and machinations that have created our current situation. That means fostering civic engagement at all levels, shifting culture, engaging the next generation with the same vigor as the anti-abortion movement, and exposing the detrimental outcomes when abortion is politicized.

Join us by making your voice heard on November 2 and take action to create change. Find out more.
