South Carolina House rejects total abortion ban before passing bill with narrow exceptions

The South Carolina House on Tuesday approved a bill that outlaws abortion except in the cases of pregnancies caused by rape or incest, and to prevent death of the pregnant person.

The chamber initially rejected the bill without rape or incest exceptions by eight votes. But once Republicans saw the outcome, they quickly went through a number of complex procedures and votes to bring the bill back and pass it. This bill is being advanced while the South Carolina Supreme Court is blocking the state’s 6-week ban from taking effect.

The Reproductive Freedom for All campaign, which gathered signatures to get the measure on the ballot, is expected to appeal to the Democratic-leaning Michigan Supreme Court in the coming days and expressed confidence it would prevail.
