South Carolina Supreme Court takes up state’s abortion ban
South Carolina Supreme Court Justices grilled lawyers over the extent of the right to privacy in a case Wednesday that could determine the scope of the state’s abortion restrictions.
The hearing marked the latest legal challenge to South Carolina’s 2021 ban on abortions after cardiac activity is detected, typically around six weeks, with exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest, or those that endanger the patient’s life.

Distinct from services that sell pills to patients on the internet, a growing army of community-based distributors is reaching pregnant women through word of mouth or social media to supply pills for free — though typically without medical oversight.

On Tuesday, the doors of the historic Howard Theater in Washington, DC’s Shaw neighborhood opened up to a crowd composed mainly of reproductive-rights activists and Democratic campaign and DNC staffers. By invite-only, they were there to see President Joe Biden.
His big pledge: If Democrats hold their majorities in the House and the Senate this November, the first bill he will send to Congress will protect abortion access at the federal level, and he will sign it in January, 50 years after Roe v. Wade was decided.

Thank you to everyone who took part in a fascinating post-screening discussion and, of course, to our partners too! On the east coast, we were proud to be this month’s pick at the Beacon Film Society with a screening in partnership with Planned Parenthood of Greater NY.
A coalition of inspiring partners will come together to discuss Battleground and support reproductive rights in Lincoln, NE TODAY, 10/21. Nebraska Abortion Resources, ACLU NE, Planned Parenthood NE and the Women’s Fund of Omaha will speak about their crucial work and the threats to reproductive freedom in the Midwest after a screening of the film.
